Visual estimation test

A little under half. Roughly three quarters. We make these judgments all day, but rarely check them. This visual estimation test asks for a precise percentage of a displayed shape. Move from a quick impression to a number, lock it in, and compare the result with the true proportion. There is no arithmetic to prepare and no data to memorize. Play three practice rounds to explore the gap between “looks about right” and the actual value.

How scoring works

Subtract 4 points from 100 for each percentage point between your guess and the actual proportion, with a minimum of zero. Guessing 60% when the answer is 50% is a 10 percentage-point miss and earns 60 game points. Percentage points describe the direct gap, not relative percentage error.

A little head start

Start with halves and quarters, then refine. Deciding whether something is above or below 50% is often easier than choosing an exact number immediately.

Scan the whole grid. A dense cluster in one corner can distract you from empty space elsewhere.

Good questions

Is this a maths test?

It is a visual guessing game. You answer with a percentage, but the task does not require written calculations.

Why show percentage points?

They state the direct difference between your guess and the answer. This keeps the feedback clear without mixing it with relative percentage error.

Can I use a calculator or measure the screen?

You can, but it removes the visual challenge. Agree on the same approach when comparing a run with friends.
